Navigating EMF’s In The Wellness World

EMFs (Electric and Magnetic Fields) are the talk of the town in the wellness world these days. With every new product touting "low EMF" features and entire lines dedicated to EMF blocking, it's clear this is a big deal.

EMFs are forms of energy that are everywhere, from the sun to our smartphones. While we know to be cautious about ionizing radiation (like what's used in dental X-rays), the impact of everyday tech radiation is still being studied. What's clear, though, is its link to health issues like oxidative stress.

As our tech dependency grows, it's more important than ever to think about reducing or blocking EMF exposure. Interestingly, diving deep into wellness and biohacking can actually increase our EMF exposure because of all the gadgets involved.

I’m guilty of this - my Oura ring, for instance, is constantly communicating with my phone. But since I like tracking my sleep and steps, I choose to keep it while minimizing exposure elsewhere.

My EMF journey began about a year ago. My local community sauna has a no-phone policy, which made me consider how EMFs could be affecting my mental well-being. I noticed feeling hectic during and after tech-heavy moments, like scrolling through my phone on morning walks or being in crowded, tech-saturated places like airports. In contrast, tech-free environments like the sauna or remote vacation spots brought me a sense of calm and stability.

As it is with most things in our lives, returning to basics is often the answer. We don’t need tech to do things like meditation and breathwork. But in our modern 2023 life, electronics are a reality. The challenge is finding a balance.

So, how do we reduce EMF exposure without going off-grid? Here are five simple tactics that totally changed the game for me:

  1. Airplane Mode: Keep your phone in airplane mode whenever it’s not in use, especially at night.

  2. Ditch the Airbuds: I cannot stress this one enough. Defender Shield's wired headphones are my top choice.

  3. Wi-Fi Break: Install a Wi-Fi Kill Switch or set scheduled downtimes for your router. I set my Wi-Fi to turn off while I’m sleeping.

  4. Limit Smart Home Product: Unplug Wi-Fi devices when not in use, especially in the bedroom.

  5. EMF-Blocking Cases: Buy a phone and laptop case that block EMFs. SafeSleeve and Defender Shield are my favorites that have passed the test with an EMF meter.

And on that note, consider buying an EMF meter to test your products as well as your efforts to reduce exposure around the home. I've tested many "low EMF" claiming products that didn't meet expectations. The TriField meter is what I use.

Since adopting these practices, my home has become the wellness oasis I've always wanted, offering a serene escape from the busy world outside.
